February 5, 2016 – Barnstable: A recent Boston news broadcast by WBZ Channel 4 television focused on problems with an energy efficiency contractor for the Mass Save® Home Energy Services program.

The Cape Light Compact administers its energy efficiency programs locally as directed by the Cape Light Compact Governing Board and approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. The Compact collaborates with the electric and natural gas utilities statewide through Mass Save as a statewide marketing effort. The Compact uses very stringent standards for screening contractors that offer home energy assessments and weatherization work on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.  A contractor for Mass Save, who has recently been subject to criticism, does not work in Cape Light Compact’s program.

“We serve thousands of residential consumers every year with energy efficiency services and have a very good reputation for effective quality work,” said Maggie Downey, Cape Light Compact administrator. “As anyone who uses our services can attest, our energy specialists and contractors are very professional and knowledgeable.”

The Compact requires professional certifications and qualifications, and conducts thorough background checks on contractors.   (See requirements on website at: https://www.capelightcompact.org/hescontractors).

Consumers can also select a contractor from the list on the Compact’s website who can implement the work that was recommended through a home energy assessment.

The Compact has a quality assurance/quality control process in place that is used for our energy efficiency program and customers can contact Cape Light Compact for an independent review of work that was completed in their home.

“If a consumer has a question or complaint regarding energy efficiency work, we have a process to respond promptly to see that the issue is resolved,” Downey said.

“We agree with Channel 4 that energy efficiency should be a ‘no-brainer.’  For the vast majority of people that is exactly what it is.  Our goal is to make sure it a good experience for everyone.”
