What is a Home Energy Assessment?
Cape Light Compact’s No-Cost Home Energy Assessment connects you with an Energy Specialist. Your Energy Specialist will evaluate your entire home from the attic to the basement, identifying energy efficiency opportunities that we directly help you address to reduce energy usage, increase year-round comfort, and create a healthier environment for homeowners and renters alike. The Compact offers both in-person and virtual assessments.

Weatherization
Air Sealing: The closing up of gaps and cracks of where air leaks in or out of your home. Addressing these leaks help maintain a steadier indoor temperature and reduces strain on your heating and cooling system.
Insulation: Acts like a thermal blank for your home, better keeping heat in during winter and the heat out during the summer. Insulation is typically found in your attic, perimeter walls, as well as basement sills. Proper insulation can help improve comfort, reduce energy usage, and lessen your environmental impact.
Heat Pumps
Heat Pumps are one of the most efficient ways to cool and heat your home. Cape Light Compact offers incentives on three different types of heat pumps: air source, ground source, and air-to water.
Heat Pump Water Heater
Heat pump water heaters are the most efficient way to heat water in a home—up to four times more efficient than conventional electric water heaters. They work by extracting heat from the air surrounding the unit to heat water. These advanced systems are best suited for homes with basements or separate utility rooms
Solar
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are quickly becoming an affordable way to offset electric costs. While Cape Light Compact (CLC) does not currently offer incentives or rebates on solar PV, customer can finance solar through the Energy Saver Home Loan (link to Energy Saver Home Loan Page). Additionally, we want to help inform our customers about the various options and financial incentives available for solar PV systems.

Induction Stove
Induction technology uses magnetic currents to directly heat your pots and pans, instead of the cooktop. Cooking with induction makes mealtime easier with quicker heat, precise control, and easy cleanup.
Electric Vehicle and EV Charging
The Compact currently does not offer rebates or incentives for electric verhicles or chargers. There may be incentives available directly from Eversource
Battery Storage
If you are planning to add a battery system to your solar installation, be sure to check out the Compact’s ConnectedSolutions program. This program allows the Compact to discharge your battery into the grid during periods of peak electric consumption in exchange for a yearly incentive.
Heat Pump Dryers
Heat pump dryers use a heat pump that transfers heat from the air where the unit is located into the drum instead of using an electric resistance coil to generate it. These dryers use 40% less energy than standard models saving customers $430 a year.

What to Expect at the Home Energy Assessment
- Energy Efficiency Opportunities: An Energy Specialist will conduct a comprehensive energy evaluation of your home, from the attic to the basement. The Energy Specialist will assess energy efficiency opportunities related to your home’s current air sealing and insulation levels, heating and cooling system, appliances, and clean energy resources, such as solar and battery storage. An Energy Specialist may provide you with instant energy-saving measures, such as a low-flow showerhead, faucet aerators, and advanced power strips.
- Safety: If your home has a fuel-burning heating system or appliances, the Energy Specialist will conduct a Combustion Safety Test to ensure these are operating safely in your home.
After the Home Energy Assessment
- Home Energy Action Report: Your Energy Specialist will provide you with a custom Home Energy Action Report outlining a roadmap to pursue the energy efficiency opportunities identified during your home energy assessment.
- Weatherization Contract: If air sealing and insulation opportunities were identified during your home energy assessment, your Energy Specialist will provide you with a weatherization contract for your signature. Upon signature, your Energy Specialist will notify a program insulation contractor on your behalf to reach out and schedule the recommended work at a date and time that works best for you. If you prefer to use a specific contractor, you can select one of our participating contractors by using our Find a Contractor tool and indicating this contractor on your weatherization contract.
