Provincetown Theater
The Need
A new, efficient heating and cooling system able to meet the fluctuating needs of the performance space.

The Story
Since opening its doors in 2004, the Provincetown Theater has been a fixture in the Provincetown
arts scene. The building, originally built in 1900, was last used as an auto garage before its conversion
into a 110-seat theater. The building still utilized a propane heating system, and the operators wanted
to upgrade to something more energy efficient.
One of the biggest challenges of the project was sizing the system correctly to meet the increased
demand during theater performances. RISE installed a high-efficiency ground-mounted packaged
heat pump to electrify the HVAC system. The unit can handle the variable load needed when the
theater is at capacity, and features dual enthalpy controls to utilize free cooling when possible. The
new unit is mounted higher than ground level to reduce the risk of damage from potential flooding.
The disassembly of the old system and installation of the new system was completed over the
course of one week, minimizing disruptions to the theater’s schedule, and was fully incentivized
through the Compact’s program for non-profit organizations.
The Cape Light Compact program for non-profits performed an incredibly valuable service by installing a new electric heat pump system for our building that was fully incentivized. We can’t thank Cape Light Compact enough for this truly invaluable gift to the theater, and by association, our community.
