About the Business
Since their first flight between Boston and Provincetown in 1989, Cape Air has provided year-round service to some of the most beautiful destinations in the world including Hyannis, Nantucket, New Bedford, Martha’s Vineyard, Providence, RI, South Florida, the Caribbean and Micronesia. The employee-owned company, based in Hyannis, Massachusetts, has grown from three flights a day between Provincetown and Boston in 1989 to 400 flights a day, and service to approximately
500,000 passengers annually as one of the largest regional airlines in the U.S. Cape Air operates a fleet of 76 Cessna 402s, 16 Tecnam P2012 Travelers and 4 Britten-Norman Islanders. Cape Air’s Sustainability program has received numerous awards, including the EPA’s Environmental Merit Award.
Project Highlights
Cape Air’s Sustainability Program, working with Provincetown Airport Manager, Butch Lisenby, contacted Cape Light Compact to do an energy assessment to see if the efficiency of the lighting at the airport could be improved by retrofitting existing lighting with Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps and fixtures. The assessment report concluded that 37,750 kWh could be saved annually, cutting electricity use at the airport by 30%. The job was completed during the week of September 28th, 2020.
Jim Wolf, Sustainability Program Director for Cape Air, stated that, “Thanks to a limited time discount being offered by Cape Light Compact to commercial customers at zero cost, Cape Air and Provincetown Airport management decided to proceed with the energy efficiency lighting upgrades. The project is expected to save the airport 29.6 metrics tons of greenhouse gases and $7,000 in electric costs annually. The whole process of working with the Compact was simple and easy.”
These upgrades are expected to reduce electricity costs by approximately $7,000 in the first year. A final bonus of LED technology is that these lamps/fixtures should last for at least 15 years, reducing the cost for annual maintenance at the airport!
