CAPE LIGHT COMPACT STARTS INSTALLATIONS ON THE LARGEST MUNICIPAL LED STREETLIGHT CHANGEOVER IN THE NORTHEAST<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Cape Light Compact begins installation of 17,000 energy efficient streetlights starting in Hyannis<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Barnstable, Mass., January 6, 2014 \u2013 <\/strong>Sixteen Towns and four Fire Districts are poised to begin rolling out energy efficient streetlights. Today, <\/strong>over 1,300 streetlights in the Hyannis Fire District will be some of the first to be retrofitted over to light emitting diodes (LEDs) as part of Cape Light Compact\u2019s LED streetlight retrofit project. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span>ver the last few months, the Compact\u2019s vendor, Siemens (chosen through a Request for Qualifications process), has been conducting a technical assessment of all existing municipal owned streetlights in order to provide a street lighting audit report demonstrating any unique solutions prior to fixture order and installation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The installations in Hyannis are estimated to save the Fire District over $75,000 on their electric bills plus annual maintenance savings of $17,725 for a total annual savings of over $92,000. Installations across Cape Cod and Martha\u2019s Vineyard are anticipated to be completed by June 2014, with over 17,000 municipally-owned streetlights retrofitted. This energy saving project is projected to save Towns and Fire Districts more than $800,000 per year on their electric bills and streetlight maintenance. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This streetlight project is part of the Compact\u2019s 2013-2015 Statewide Energy Efficiency Plan.\u00a0 \u00a0LED technologies selected and designed for this conversion project are expected to use 70% less energy, and last longer than the existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, thereby lowering the municipal maintenance costs. The primary fixture solution that has been selected for the project is the Cree Beta LED XSP1. This fixture looks similar to the old HPS cobra head fixtures and meets or exceeds all project specifications, including: highest product efficiency, warm color temperature, optical and lumen control along with a 10-year product warranty. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Compact\u2019s Governing Board Chair Dr. Joyce Flynn states, \u201cThis is the Compact\u2019s largest Cape and Vineyard project to date and one that will dramatically reduce member towns\u2019 costs for purchasing electricity and maintaining streetlights.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the first quarter of 2013, the Compact installed LED streetlights at various test locations in participating towns and Fire Districts. Through this demonstration period, the Compact obtained feedback from members of the public in order to better assist in the transition. The Compact has also been working closely with each town\u2019s Department of Public Works (DPW) and Highway staff, who have provided important input regarding various lighting performance metrics such as the color temperature characteristics and light trespass controls. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Town of Yarmouth Department of Public Works Director George Allaire states, \u201cThe Yarmouth DPW is looking forward with great anticipation for the complete change out of streetlights to new energy efficient LED streetlights thanks to Cape Light Compact.\u201d\u00a0 Mr. Allaire notes that fixtures that were once red-capped, even if subsequently adopted, will remain red-capped.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Multiple crews will be advancing the conversion to this energy efficient technology each work day and will be moving to Yarmouth when Hyannis is complete.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
