Heat\u00a0Pump Water Heater:\u00a0Technology<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike\u00a0traditional\u00a0electric water heaters,\u00a0which\u00a0use electricity to\u00a0generate heat directly,\u00a0heat pump water heaters\u00a0utilize\u00a0ambient heat from the surrounding air\u00a0in order\u00a0to\u00a0heat water.\u00a0Imagine a refrigerator working in reverse: rather than removing heat from inside of a fridge to keep your food cold, a heat pump water\u00a0heater uses similar technology to\u00a0pull heat from the surrounding air and transfer it into the enclosed tank, heating the water inside of it.\u00a0Because of this process,\u00a0heat pump water heaters produce\u00a0cool air\u00a0as\u00a0a by-product.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because heat pump water heaters\u00a0simply\u00a0move heat instead of generating it,\u00a0they use\u00a0approximately\u00a0<\/span>60-70%<\/span><\/a>\u00a0less energy than traditional electric water heaters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are\u00a0<\/span>multiple factors<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to take into account when\u00a0considering a heat pump water heater, so\u00a0it\u2019s important\u00a0to understand\u00a0how installation locations and conditions\u00a0will affect the performance and efficiency of your unit.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most Heat Pump Water Heaters include a fan and compressor housed directly on top of the water tank. This design requires installation in an unconditioned or semi-conditioned space with substantial clearances, where the by-product of cold air won\u2019t be an unwelcome addition. Installing your heat pump water heater in a conditioned space may lead to higher heating costs during the winter months because your heating system may over-compensate due to the cold air exhausted by the unit. In addition, when choosing an installation location, you may want to keep in mind that heat pump water heaters create noise similar to that of a running refrigerator or dehumidifier. To ensure your unit operates at peak performance, remember to clean the air filter routinely to prevent dust buildup that can reduce airflow to your water heater.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0To determine\u00a0the\u00a0ideal\u00a0installation location\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0heat pump water heater\u00a0in your home,\u00a0considering the following criteria:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Choose\u00a0an\u00a0unused\u00a0and\u00a0unconditioned\u00a0or semi-conditioned\u00a0space.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Find a location that offers ample room for adequate airflow and clearances <\/span>around air entry and discharge\u00a0(approximately the size of a 12×12 room).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Find an area where the temperature of surrounding air\u00a0consistently\u00a0stays between\u00a040- and 90-degrees\u00a0Fahrenheit (installation\u00a0outdoors or\u00a0in unheated garages\u00a0is\u00a0not appropriate in cold climates).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Make sure\u00a0the\u00a0ceiling is high enough to accommodate\u00a0the vertical dimensions of the unit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Determine if the location\u00a0already contains, or has room for, a condensate drain or pump.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
