Yarmouth, MA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013<\/p>\nAt the end of October, Farmington Solar, LLC, brought their new 77 megawatt (MW) solar project online. While the project is located in Farmington, ME, customers located on Cape Cod and Martha\u2019s Vineyard will be able to reap the benefits of this renewable energy project through the Cape Light Compact\u2019s power supply program.<\/p>\n
Cape Light Compact (Compact) was formed in 1997 as a municipal aggregator serving the 21 towns of Cape Cod and Martha\u2019s Vineyard. Municipal aggregation authorizes towns to pool their buying power, allowing them to negotiate the terms and conditions of a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply electricity to their residents and businesses.<\/p>\n
The Compact entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, to purchase energy and Massachusetts Class 1 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from the Farmington Solar project. Class 1 RECs are\u00a0generated by renewable energy facilities located in New England\u00a0that began operation after 1997 and create electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV), solar thermal, wind, low impact hydro, aerobic digester gas, geothermal, etc.<\/p>\n
Compact Administrator, Maggie Downey said, \u201cThis project offered the perfect opportunity for the Compact to participate in the expansion of renewable energy right here in New England. The Farmington Solar farm will help ensure our customers receive clean, affordable, and fixed-price energy as part of our power supply program.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Compact is one of the first municipal aggregators to sign a firm PPA for energy and RECs from a specific project. Through this PPA, the Compact will receive energy and Class 1 RECs from just under 5 MW of the project. The PPA between the Compact and Farmington Solar has a term of 20 years, with a fixed price for the duration of the term.<\/p>\n
The full size of the Farmington project is approximately 77 MW. The Compact\u2019s portion of the project is expected to generate approximately 8,720,000 kWh of energy each year, enough to power roughly 1,200 homes annually.<\/p>\n
This PPA builds upon the Compact\u2019s previous commitments to provide Cape and Vineyard electric customers with renewable energy options. In 2017, the Compact became a Green Aggregation, meaning that 100% of customer energy use was matched with Renewable Energy Certificates. In 2019, the Compact added the CLC Local Green options which allow customers to double down on local renewable energy by matching 50% or 100% of their usage with Class 1 RECs.<\/p>\n
