Three\u00a0Opportunities to\u00a0Support a Smarter Grid<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Terms like \u201cdemand response,\u201d\u00a0\u201cpeak demand,\u201d\u00a0and \u201csmart\u00a0technologies\u201d\u00a0are growing more commonplace,\u00a0but you may have some questions\u00a0about\u00a0how these concepts relate and\u00a0their importance in creating a cleaner, more resilient energy system.\u00a0In the past year, the Compact has rolled out several demand response programs\u00a0designed to do exactly that: establish a more sustainable,\u00a0affordable energy system.\u00a0In this blog, we\u2019ll\u00a0explain the terms\u00a0mentioned\u00a0above,\u00a0plus\u00a0provide an overview of our three\u00a0demand response programs\u00a0designed to\u00a0create a win-win for our\u00a0<\/span>residential<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>business<\/span><\/a>\u00a0customers and the grid.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding Demand Response\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Demand response programs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0focus on\u00a0motivating\u00a0customers to\u00a0shift or reduce\u00a0their energy use during times when a region\u2019s energy\u00a0demand\u00a0is high.\u00a0While\u00a0energy use ebbs and flows\u00a0throughout the day and across the year,\u00a0the times of highest usage are referred to as\u00a0times of\u00a0\u201cpeak demand\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>In New England<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0the highest\u00a0energy demand\u00a0occurs\u00a0during the\u00a0summer heat\u00a0when\u00a0customers\u00a0increasingly rely on\u00a0cooling\u00a0systems to maintain indoor comfort.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By participating\u00a0in a demand response program,\u00a0you\u00a0can\u00a0help shift energy use\u00a0from these times of peak usage. For example,\u00a0suppose\u00a0it\u2019s a sweltering summer day\u00a0on\u00a0the Cape and Vineyard and\u00a0many households are cranking up\u00a0their air conditioning\u00a0to beat the afternoon heat.\u00a0To help the Grid you can enroll your thermostat in our\u00a0ConnectedSolutions\u00a0program. In advance of a peak demand event, your thermostat will be lowered to \u201cpre-cool\u201d your home. Then, during the event, your thermostat temperature setting will be increased\u00a0four degrees\u00a0from its original setting\u00a0to reduce the amount of electricity your AC is drawing.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reducing these surges in demand\u00a0<\/span>plays a key role<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0establishing a more reliable, affordable energy system. This behavior\u00a0decreases\u00a0both\u00a0the need to\u00a0build additional transmission infrastructure and the need to\u00a0draw power from\u00a0supplementary\u00a0generation sources, which are often powered by fossil fuels and\u00a0are\u00a0more expensive to operate. In turn, this change also\u00a0helps keep\u00a0electricity costs\u00a0down\u00a0by lowering\u00a0infrastructure and energy\u00a0costs for\u00a0all ratepayers.\u00a0These\u00a0shifts also make it easier to rely on renewable energy sources, like solar\u00a0and wind, that\u00a0are not designed to\u00a0provide surge support as easily\u00a0because of their\u00a0intermittent supply.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ways to Participate\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Compact is excited to now offer both its residential and business customers multiple ways to participate in demand response.\u00a0We currently offer\u00a0three\u00a0programs, each of which is part of our ConnectedSolutions\u00a0offerings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enroll My Thermostat:<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0Residential customers\u00a0who have a central air conditioning system connected to a smart thermostat can receive Amazon e-gift cards for allowing the Compact to make slight adjustments to their thermostat setpoint during times of high electricity demand. From June 1 through September 30,\u00a0customers\u00a0can\u00a0sign up\u00a0to\u00a0permit the\u00a0Compact\u00a0to turn up\u00a0their\u00a0thermostat several degrees during\u00a0\u201cdemand response events\u201d, which the Compact will call\u00a0a couple hours before\u00a0energy use\u00a0is predicted to\u00a0spike in the summer.\u00a0Customers always retain control of their thermostats, meaning they can override the adjustments and opt out of an event, if desired.\u00a0Customers will receive a $25 Amazon e-gift card for each smart thermostat they enroll, plus an additional $20 Amazon e-gift card per thermostat for each year where they participate in at least 25% of events. If you don\u2019t already own a\u00a0<\/span>smart thermostat<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>central air conditioning system<\/span><\/a>\u00a0but are considering an upgrade to your cooling system, be sure to check out our incentives for\u00a0both technologies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Enroll My Battery:<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Residential customers now have a second option for participating in demand response.\u00a0Customers\u00a0who\u00a0have a qualifying battery storage system installed at\u00a0their home\u00a0can receive incentives for allowing the Compact to draw stored energy from\u00a0the\u00a0battery during times of peak demand.\u00a0The Compact will call peak demand events during both summer (June 1\u00a0through September 30) and winter (December 1 through March 31), and incentives will be in proportion to the average kW of power drawn from\u00a0the\u00a0battery during each season.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commercial ConnectedSolutions:<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0Our demand response offerings aren\u2019t only for residential customers!\u00a0Businesses\u00a0are also eligible for incentives\u00a0by\u00a0reducing their energy use during the summer and winter seasons. The Compact calculates incentives\u00a0based on the average kW of power\u00a0reduced across all peak demand events\u00a0in a given\u00a0season\u00a0and the type of technology used to achieve that reduction. Businesses have the option of\u00a0automated\u00a0or manual\u00a0reductions\u00a0in energy drawn from the grid\u00a0(referred to as \u201ccurtailment\u201d)\u00a0based on alerts received in advance of\u00a0demand response\u00a0events. Businesses\u00a0can\u00a0choose to decrease\u00a0their\u00a0energy consumption\u00a0and\/or\u00a0draw\u00a0upon\u00a0battery storage\u00a0to achieve this curtailment.\u00a0The Compact can connect customers with curtailment service providers (CSP)\u00a0to help\u00a0determine\u00a0the optimal solution.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0accelerates its progress toward\u00a0<\/span>strategic electrification<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>net zero emissions<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0demand response programs will play an increasingly important role in helping shape our electric grid. The Compact is excited to\u00a0work with an increasing number of participants in our\u00a0demand response programs, designed to deliver incentives to our customers, enhance the resiliency of our communities, and better the environment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
