Opportunity for Cape and Vineyard Residents to Participate in New National Home Energy Score Pilot
Washington, D.C., November 9, 2010 – Cape Light Compact is one of ten nationwide partners chosen by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to administer the new Home Energy Score pilot program for local communities on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. Kevin Galligan, Cape Light Compact’s Energy Efficiency Program Manager, represented the Compact at today’s announcement in Washington, D.C. by Vice President Joseph Biden at the Middle Class Task Force Recovery through Retrofit Event.
The new Home Energy Score pilot program introduces a new energy label that ranks a home’s energy efficiency and energy consumption on a scale of one to ten compared to similar homes in their region. Consumers will also learn how much money they will save by making energy efficient upgrades such as adding insulation and sealing air leaks.

“We are excited to advance these national efforts locally as a pathway to help more customers participate in our energy savings programs and introduce more qualified energy efficiency professionals to serve this growing field of work,” said Galligan.
Cape Light Compact will test the new Home Energy Score in 200 volunteer homes throughout Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard in 2011 through their Mass Save® Home Energy Assessment Program. The Compact and the Department of Energy (DOE) will test a wide range of issues associated with the Home Energy Score during the pilot process, including but not limited to:
- Homeowner response
- Home energy assessor training and reaction to the scoring tool
- Quality assurance methods
- Climatic adjustments of the scoring tool
Based on findings from the pilots, DOE will refine the program and launch the Home Energy Score nationally in late 2011.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HOME ENERGY SCORE PILOT PROGRAM
- Call Cape Light Compact at (800) 797-6699 to sign up for a free Home Energy Assessment.
- Pilot volunteers MUST SPECIFICALLY ASK to volunteer for the Home Energy Score pilot program.
- Home Energy Score volunteers will be placed on a wait-list and notified by Cape Light Compact if they are chosen to participate in the pilot program.
- You MUST BE A YEAR-ROUND RESIDENT of Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard to be eligible to participate in the Home Energy Score pilot program.
Cape Light Compact’s FREE Home Energy Assessment utilizes a “whole house” approach to help identify energy efficient upgrades that will reduce energy bills, increase year-round comfort, and create a healthier environment. Plus, the Compact covers at least 75% of the cost up to $2,000 to install recommended insulation.
